The harvest for 2001 has once again been hit by drought, but forecasts
suggest that on average production levels will be up on the previous
year, although fruit and vegetable production is down. On the whole
Morocco's food industry has performed well over the past year with the
fisheries market pre-eminent. The kingdom enjoys huge sea resources
having territorial waters which extend 1.2mn km and a seacoast 3,500km
in length. Morocco is the top fish producer and exporter in Africa and
the Arab world with fish produce worth more than $600mn in 2000.
