Much of Morocco's 60,000km road network is in serious need of upgrading and major construction work is currently underway to both improve and extend the roads. A further 1,500km stretch of roads is to be added by 2010. A Mediterranean road construction project involves improvements to a 550km stretch of coastal road in the north of the country. International loans have been received to finance the project. Morocco is also planning major work to develop its rail network to improve it internally and to link it up with rail systems in both European and Arab countries. The country's transport minister stated that the International Railways Union was looking into the technical aspects of the project. Railways in the north of the country are currently being upgraded under an investment plan of $99 million with the aim of relieving traffic on the busy Casablanca-Fez link. Work set for completion before the end of the year.
