Tunisian power generation is undergoing rapid expansion at an
estimated 7 per cent annually to meet ever rising demands. A World
Bank study forecast that the country's water demands will outstrip
supplies by 2010 unless the issue is seriously addressed. It is an
area that requires a vast expenditure which the government recognises
that it cannot meet alone and sees the need for private and
international investors. Tunisia's water options are building more
dams with an agreed construction programme as follows: five dams are
under construction, work on a further three is commencing and another
seven are proposed. An expansion of desalination is also an option
with more likely to be added to the existing four desalination plants
under public water authority, SONEDE. Recycling and conservation
measures are also considered such as the development of wastewater
treatment to provide water for irrigation purposes. The private sector
is being encouraged to get involved to improve the rate of wastewater
treatment.
